Besic Preparations of Civil Services Exams


Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious and sought-after competitive exams in India. Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), it is the gateway to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other prestigious Group A and Group B services of the Indian government. Every year, lakhs of aspirants appear for the exam, but only a few hundred make it to the final selection. In this blog, we will discuss how to crack the Civil Services Exam in a comprehensive manner, covering all aspects of the exam.


Understanding the Exam


The Civil Services Exam consists of three stages:


Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

Main Examination (Mains)

Personality Test (Interview)

Preliminary Examination (Prelims)


The Prelims is the first stage of the CSE, and it consists of two papers:


General Studies Paper 1

General Studies Paper 2 (Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT)

The General Studies Paper 1 comprises questions on Indian Polity, Economy, History, Geography, Current Affairs, Environment, and Science & Technology. The CSAT paper tests the candidate's comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.


The Prelims is a qualifying examination, and the marks obtained in this stage are not counted for the final selection. Only those candidates who score above the cut-off marks in both papers are eligible to appear for the Main Examination.


Main Examination (Mains)


The Main Examination is the second stage of the CSE, and it consists of nine papers:


Paper A - Indian Language (Qualifying)

Paper B - English (Qualifying)

Essay Paper

General Studies Paper 1

General Studies Paper 2

General Studies Paper 3

General Studies Paper 4

Optional Subject Paper 1

Optional Subject Paper 2

The Indian Language and English papers are qualifying in nature, and the marks obtained in these papers are not counted for the final selection. The Essay Paper and the four General Studies Papers are compulsory, while the candidate has to choose two optional subjects for the remaining two papers.


The Main Examination is descriptive in nature, and the candidate's writing and analytical skills are tested in this stage. The marks obtained in the Main Examination are counted for the final selection.


Personality Test (Interview)


The Personality Test, also known as the Interview, is the final stage of the CSE. Candidates who clear the Main Examination are called for the Interview. The Interview tests the candidate's personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, and general knowledge. The marks obtained in the Interview are added to the marks obtained in the Main Examination, and the final merit list is prepared based on the candidate's overall performance.


Preparation Strategy


Now that we have understood the exam pattern, let us discuss the preparation strategy for each stage of the CSE.


Preliminary Examination (Prelims)


Syllabus: The first step in the preparation of the Prelims is to understand the syllabus thoroughly. The UPSC has provided a detailed syllabus for both General Studies Paper 1 and General Studies Paper 2 (CSAT). Candidates should go through the syllabus carefully and make a list of the topics to be covered.


Study Material: There are plenty of books and study materials available in the market for the Prelims. Candidates should choose the books based on the quality of content and author's reputation. NCERT books are considered the best source for building a strong foundation in the subjects.


Revision: Revision is the key to cracking the Prelims. Candidates should revise the topics.
